Study-Rest-Review-Repeat.
STUDY the passage. Use all memorization helps.
REST from studying. Passive hearing (audio) or reading (visual) is allowed.
REVIEW the passage again using the memorization helps.
- Be diligent and consistent for at least a few consecutive days (7-14 days is preferred).
REPEAT the rest/review cycle often, even as you add new passages to your learning.
- For example, after you have sufficiently studied Aleph, move on to Beth/Bet. During Beth/Bet’s passive “rest” cycle, review Aleph. Return to Beth/Bet. As you add more passages, return to various previously learned passages during the REST cycles of the new learning.
- Don’t give in to discouragement when you realize how much you have forgotten during the review cycles. Repetition of review takes much time to become natural. Memorizing scripture is not a “once and done” proposition, but a way of life.
While review and study are almost the same, “study” is reserved for active, NEW learning. New learning requires effort and intention and involves a certain amount of low stress. “Review” is reserved for prayerfully rehearsing previously learned material and is passive, or “takes in” information to the senses rather than produces effort, and is therefore designed to be less stressful.
The idea of intense learning interchanged with periods of passive “restful” learning is a known memorization method which increases the mind’s long-term storage capability. The SR3 acronym, to the best of my knowledge, is my own. When you “Repeat,” repeat the Rs (rest, review, repeat).
